Part 9: Case Studies and Real-Life Applications

Stories of Impact: How Strategic Giving Changed Lives

Charitable giving, when paired with thoughtful planning, can do more than support worthy causes; it can transform lives, preserve wealth, and create enduring legacies. In this ninth installment of our series, we explore real-life examples of how strategic charitable tools have helped donors achieve both philanthropic and financial goals.

These stories are anonymized to protect privacy, but the lessons are real. They illustrate how generosity, guided by expertise, becomes a force for lasting impact.

Case Study: Turning a Business Sale into a Lifetime Income Stream

One of the most compelling examples I’ve encountered recently involves a client who has spent decades building a successful business. When he decided to sell, the company was valued at approximately $5 million. While the sale represented a major milestone, it also came with a significant tax burden, specifically, an estimated $1.7 million in capital gains tax.

Rather than proceeding with a traditional sale, we explored the use of a charitable remainder unitrust (CRUT). By transferring the business interest into the CRUT before the sale, the client was able to avoid immediate recognition of capital gains. The trust sold the business, reinvested the full proceeds, and began paying the client and his spouse a fixed percentage of the trust’s value annually for the rest of their lives.

This strategy accomplished several goals:

  • Tax Efficiency: By placing the business into the CRUT before the sale, the client avoided approximately $1.7 million in capital gains tax. That savings remained in the trust, available for investment and income generation.
  • Income Security: The CRUT was structured to pay the couple 6% annually. Because the entire $5 million was invested (rather than the post-tax remainder), the income stream was significantly larger than it would have been had the sale occurred outside the trust.
  • Charitable Legacy: While the trust will eventually distribute its remainder to charity, only 10% of the initial value is required to go to charity under IRS rules. This means the vast majority of the assets remain available to generate income for the donors during their lifetimes.
  • Estate Planning Benefits: The CRUT removed the business asset from the client’s taxable estate, reducing potential estate tax exposure and simplifying the transfer of other assets to heirs.

This case illustrates the power of timing and structure. By acting before the sale, the client preserved wealth, secured income, and created a charitable legacy; all while avoiding a substantial tax hit. It’s a strategy that’s increasingly relevant for business owners, especially those approaching retirement or succession.

Other Stories of Strategic Impact

While the CRUT example stands out for its scale and efficiency, other donors have used different tools to achieve similarly meaningful outcomes.

One widow, for instance, used a charitable remainder trust to convert a rental property into a lifetime income stream while supporting her church and a local food bank. Another family established a private foundation after selling a business, using it to engage multiple generations in philanthropy and respond to community needs.

In each case, the donor began with a vision – not just to give, but to give wisely. With the right tools and guidance, that vision became reality.

Lessons from Experience

These stories share several key themes:

  1. Planning Matters: Strategic giving requires foresight. Acting before a liquidity event, whether a business sale, property disposition, or retirement, can dramatically improve outcomes.
  2. Tax Efficiency Enhances Impact: Avoiding capital gains, securing deductions, and reducing estate tax exposure allows donors to give more, not less. The tax code, when used wisely, becomes a partner in generosity.
  3. Charitable Tools Are Flexible: From donor-advised funds to charitable trusts, the right vehicle can be tailored to fit the donor’s goals, assets, and timeline. There is no one-size-fits-all solution.
  4. Legacy Is More Than Money: Strategic giving creates stories that endure. It teaches stewardship, engages families, and reflects values. The financial benefits are real, and the personal impact is often greater.
