For over 60 years Kirk & Simas has served major industries, preeminent business enterprises, and the families behind them. The Firm’s attorneys are leaders and experts in their fields providing creative, exceptional and personalized legal representation across a diverse range of practices.


Bob Trapp established his law practice in Santa Maria in 1951 and joined with Dan Kirk 1956 as the firm of Trapp & Kirk until 1972 when Bob was appointed a Judge of the Santa Barbara Superior Court. Alex Simas joined Dan Kirk’s established practice to form Kirk & Simas in 1976. Dan retired in 1993. The name of Kirk & Simas remains today a pillar in the Central Coast legal community. Other distinguished Firm alumni include Santa Barbara Superior Court judge, Jim Rigali; Santa Barbara Superior Court Commissioner, Denise Motter; and former Santa Barbara County Supervisor, Joni Gray.

Pro Bono Work

Kirk & Simas actively encourages partners and associates to provide pro bono legal services as a matter of professional responsibility and in recognition of the great need in the local community. The inherent value of hours spent on such matters are recognized in the Firm culture. The pro-bono work also benefits the individuals the Firm serves, the public at large, and the development of skills and sense of professionalism and public service for Kirk & Simas attorneys.

Kirk & Simas attorneys source and accept unpopular and challenging cases, participate in a range of pro bono activities in civil matters for low income, disabled and other disadvantage people and form, provide legal support, and have served on numerous local nonprofit boards, foundations, and other civic groups, including: the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Maria Valley; the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society; the Santa Maria Valley YMCA; Legal Aid of Santa Barbara County; the Orcutt Union School District; the Guadalupe Union School District; Allan Hancock Community College; the Marian Medical Center Foundation; the Central Coast Commission for Senior Citizens; the Oasis Senior Center; Leadership Santa Maria Valley; the Altrusa International Foundation of Santa Maria; and the Orcutt Children’s Art Foundation.
